A 243-thousand dollar Iowa State University study is underway near the north-central Iowa town of Joice to determine if wind turbines are killing birds. State biologist Guy Zenner says it’s a good place to test because the Top of Iowa Wind Farm, which has 89 turbines, is in the middle of three major wildlife areas. Iowa has one of the biggest collections of wind turbines in the world. The Department of Natural Resources helped design the study to see if wind farms could be built so close to waterfowl areas without killing a bunch of birds. The I-S-U study also will follow birds in areas away from the turbines to see if there’s a difference in behavior.
