Governor Tom Vilsack has spoken by phone with the families of Iowa servicemen killed in action in Iraq, but he has no plans to attend the funerals of those dead soldiers. Vilsack says “funerals are very private affairs and when a politician or people of authority show up at a funeral, the spotlight is taken away from where the spotlight needs to be.” Vilsack says the focus needs to be on the fact that a “sacrifice has been made and a family is grieving.”Vilsack says long after the cameras and microphones are gone, the families will continue to grieve. A soldier from Davenport was buried two weeks ago in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Another Iowa soldier from Ossian will be buried Wednesday.
