Iowans can plan for a weekend in the great outdoors enjoying some of Iowa’s natural beauty minus one of the typical fees during what’s billed as Free Camping Weekend. Sherry Arntzen, a spokeswoman for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says it’s an annual treat that starts today. Some 53 state parks, recreation areas and forest campgrounds will have no camping fees this weekend for Iowa residents. Arntzen says it will provide an opportunity for veteran campers and newbies to try out the experience. For more information, go to “www.ExploreIowaParks.com”. Many of the parks will hold events, activities and interpretive programs during the free weekend, with subjects including hikes, campfire cooking and wildlife talks.
