The Iowa Association of Schoolboards is asking you to thank the people who sit on your local school board this week during “School Board Recognition Week.” I-A-S-B spokesperson Mary Vosika says being a schoolboard member is sometimes a thankless job. She says many people may not know that schoolboard members are elected volunteers who donate thousands of hours to their school districts. Vosika says schoolboards have four main duties. She says they set the course to guide local education, they hire a superintendent and allocate resources, monitor student achievement and serve as advocates for students. Vosika says schoolboard members put in their time to try and make their communities better places. What’s the average schoolboard member in Iowa look like? She says there at two-thousand-82 schoolboard members, 65-percent are male, their average age is 49 years old and the average length of service is four years.
