The Meskwaki Casino in Tama is closed. Federal Marshals shut down the Meskwaki Casino in Tama this morning over the ongoing dispute involving the tribe’s leadership. Donna Clark of Quasqeton was playing the slots at the casino when officers started shutting it down at six a-m. Clark says there were probably a couple hundred gamblers inside when Marshals came in.She says the marshals took all the employees to what she believed was the break room and the marshals stood at the enterance to the casino from the hotel. She says gamblers weren’t allowed to walk back through the casino to the hotel once they cashed in their chips. Clark says most gamblers had to leave immediately. She says if you were sitting in the hotel next to the casino, you could still go ahead and eat breakfast. Clark says there were about 10 marshals guarding the doors of the casino. She says they were just standing there and would not let anyone in or out, and she says they stood in the driveways and did not let anyone go into or out of the parking lot. The leadership dispute has been going on for weeks as a leadership council appointed by the tribes hereditary chief took over operation of the casino from a council that had been elected in 1999. The National Indian Gaming Association ordered the casino shut down after the leadership change.
