U-S Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa will meet today with the new Vice President of Columbia for a first-hand report on how the U-S-funded drug war is being fought in that South American nation. Grassley, a Republican, is chairman of the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control.Grassley says the bottom line is to get an update on whether the investment of U-S taxpayers’ dollars in the war on drugs — to stop drugs at their source — is a better place to stop them than once they get into the U-S. Francisco Santos Calderon, the Vice President of the Republic of Columbia, will be testifying before Grassley’s committee. Grassley says some of the drug cartels have more resources than entire nations, making them very challenging to thwart, capture or defeat. He calls it a “sad commentary.”Grassley will also be hearing from General James Hill, commander in chief of the U-S Southern Command, based in Miami, as well as several other top leaders in the fight against the proliferation of coca and poppy production in Columbia and the funneling of cocaine and heroin into America.
