Too many Iowa men skip the trip to the doctor’s office — until it’s too late. A state conference underway today in Des Moines has the goal of turning around those stubborn feelings for common sense. Don Brown is a prevention specialist at Employee and Family Resources and he’s helping plan the 2003 Iowa Men’s Health Summit. Brown says prevention is often the best mode of operation to let men feel like they’re empowering themselves by making themselves available to health services with respect to diseases that are prevalent in the male community. Those include: prostate cancer and other cancers, diabetes, heart disease and HIV-AIDS. Brown says about 200 people are expected for the day-long summit, which opens at 7 AM. The conference is designed for those professionals who work with men and counsel them and for the general public. Brown says the list of speakers is top-notch — including a national name. The keynote speaker is Dr. David Satcher, former U-S Surgeon General during the Clinton Administration. The summit runs until 5 PM at the West Des Moines Marriott.
