A pair of eagles has returned to nest at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge near Missouri Valley. Park Assistant Manager Steve Van Riper says eagles often pass through the refuge, but it’s rare for them to nest there. Van Riper says last year — for the first time ever — there was a successful “nesting” of eagles at the DeSoto Refuge. The bald eagles hatched two young birds that left the nest, successfully. Van Riper says believes it’s the same “couple” of bald eagles that are nesting again this year. Van Riper says the nest might be hard to spot right now.Van Riper says park staff knows where the birds are and will be checking the nest all summer. He says it’s a bit hard to see the nest right now because of the leaves in the trees, but he says park staff can point out a couple of vantage points for viewing the rare birds.
