The Clear Lake City Council passed a resolution last night -opposing- the development of casino gambling in the city. Councilman Ben Furleigh brought the resolution to the council, and says there are a couple of factors that led him to the decision, the negative effect on restaurants and hotels, and the additional costs for dealing with added crime.Clear Lake resident Bill Young addressed the council on the matter, and feels passing the resolution sends a bad message to other councils in north-central Iowa that are pursuing casino gambling. Councilman Ned Wicker says Clear Lake should not be afraid of what others will think of their decision. The resolution passed by a 4-1 vote, with councilman Jeff Nelson voting against. Worth, Cerro Gordo, and Franklin counties have all expressed interest in bringing casino gambling to north-central Iowa. Worth County voters head to the polls one week from today to vote on the matter.
