Critics of the prescription-drug program making its way through the Senate went to the capitol Wednesday night to show their objections. Deb Stehr with Iowa Citizen Action Network dressed as a skunk. She says the plan stinks, and they can smell it all the way from Washington. The senate is set to vote on a bill that would put private insurance companies in charge of running the Medicare prescription-drug benefit. Stehr says it “stinks” because the plan puts seniors at the mercy of HMO’s, insurance companies, and drug companies, and doesn’t do anything to control the cost of drugs. Ken Sagar is secretary at the Iowa Federation of Labor and sees political motives behind the bill. Sagar says the program’s designed to give President Bush an election slogan next year, something he says is too important to use for campaigning. Seniors should not have to decide whether to “heat, eat or meet” their Medicare bills. Sagar says Congress should slow down, and approve a drug benefit that’s both affordable and voluntary.
