The most popular trophy for sport hunters in Iowa should be in good supply again this fall. Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist Todd Bogenschutz says he expects pheasant numbers to be strong. He says the losses this winter should have been minimal with the lack of snowfall. The D-N-R will start its annual roadside pheasant survey August 1st.He doesn’t expect the count to go up as dramatically as last year –when they doubled — but he says they should be strong. He says last year was big recovery year after a bad winter decimated birds in 2000. He says a wet spring added to the problem, so hunting in the fall of 2001 saw a record low for pheasants. Bogenschutz says hunters could get back to a more normal bird harvest this fall. He says we should hit one-million birds, which he says had been our average. Bogenschutz says the survey predictions based on weather conditions have proved pretty reliable over the years.
