A small group of Des Moines football enthusiasts is trying to organize a Women’s Semi Professional Tackle Football team. Lisa Wright is spearheading the effort. She says there are many women’s tackle football teams in the country, including the National Women’s Football Association. She says the problem is, they’re all in big cities. She says it will work as long as Des Moines backs the team.Wright is holding tryouts for the team July 26, which she says are as much an effort to gauge interest as an attempt to form a team. She says there’s been a lot of interest so far from e-mails and phone calls about the league. What kind of a woman wants to play tackle football? Wright says she’s had web designers, professional women, housewives, and women she says are tired of guys getting all the credit for something a man can do. If enough women aged 18 or older show up for tryouts next week, Wright says work will begin on finding an affiliation with a league, finding a place to play, and finding sponsors. The team already has a nickname, the Demons.
