Spots in next week’s Class 1A state high school baseball tournament will be up for grabs tonight with substate action. Eighth ranked Granville Spalding bids for a tenth trip to the state tournament against Alta. Spalding coach Bill Wuebker says the defense and pitching are there and they’ve also been getting timely hitting from several players. Alta will be bidding for its first trip to state and while Spalding has the edge in terms of past success, Wuebker expects a tough game, as he says anybody that gets to substate is well prepared.Spalding is 26-9 and Wuebker says a challenging regular season schedule that included several larger schools has prepared them for the tournament. He says if you want to get better or grow, you have to play better competition and have some challenges and goals.
