A project called “Iowans with Disabilities in Action,” or ID Action, is taking a statewide political opinion poll over the Internet. The survey-takers want to know what Iowans who have various disabilities think on a variety of issues as they relate to the numerous upcoming elections. Rik Shannon, project manager of the ID Action program, says they hope to help the disabled “articulate their own demand for systems change.” Shannon says the poll aims to mobilize and give a voice to Iowans with disabilities. He says it is not to back any particular candidate or party. Shannon says as many as 460,000 Iowans may consider themselves disabled. Shannon says there’s no specific definition of “disabled” they’re using to determine who can take the poll. Shannon says ID Action provides tools and support to help people with disabilities assert their political rights. He says it encourages activities like registering to vote, writing to a legislator, speaking to policy makers or even running for office. The ID Action poll is available through the website “www.idaction.org” and is the first in a series of questions directed at people with disabilities. The results of the poll will also be available via that website.
