Sales Tax Holiday is this weekend

The next big national holiday on the calendar is Labor Day, but Iowans have the state sales tax holiday coming this weekend. Renee Mulvey of the Department of Revenue says the sales tax will be suspended on some items August 1st and 2nd.She says clothing and footwear priced under one hundred dollars will be tax free. The holiday was started to give a break to parents who’re shopping for school clothes. Mulvey says due to budget cuts, the state doesn’t send out notices to businesses like it used to. Mulvey says participation in the sales tax holiday is mandatory. She says businesses that’re open that Friday and Saturday, August 1st and 2nd, must exempt the covered items from sales tax. This is the fourth year for the sales tax holiday. She says each year consumers have saved between one-point-two- and one-point-six million dollars.
