Spots in next week’s state high school softball tournament were up for grabs Monday night with regional finals in the two largest classes. In 2A, top-ranked Independence beat Marion 5-0, and #2 Forest City is headed back to Fort Dodge. Forest City beat Algona 12-0 in three innings. Third-ranked Spirit Lake edged Sergeant Bluff-Luton 3-2. Fifth-ranked Carlisle downed #4 albia 8-1. It was seventh-ranked Solon 2, Clear Creek-Amana 0. MFL Mar-Mac got by Charles City 2-0 and Dallas Center-Grimes is headed to the tournament after a 3-1 victory over Carroll. In class 3A, second-ranked and defending champ North Scott is headed back to Fort Dodge after a 2-0 win over Davenport West. Top-ranked Cedar Rapids Jefferson blanked Marshalltown 4-0. Third-ranked West Des Moines Dowling was upended by Des Moines Lincoln 4-1. Fourth-ranbked West Des Moines Valley cruised past Sioux City East 6-1. Burlington blanked fifth-rated Muscatine 3-0. Eighth-ranked Fort Dodge cruised past Waverly-Shell Rock 7-1. Linn Mar edged West Delaware 2-1 in a game that went 12 innings. Southeast Polk edged Des Moines East 1-0. The rest of the field will be set this evening with regional finals in class 1A, including top-ranked South Hamilton which matches up against Eldora New Providence.
