After being rained out on Tuesday the state high school softball tournament resumes tonight in Fort Dodge with the quarterfinal round in Class 3A. Larry Niemeyer has accomplished virtually everything in the coaching profession. With more than 17-hundred wins he is the all-time national career record holder in victories and has directed four teams to state championships. He can achieve a new record this week as top-ranked Cedar Rapids Jefferson opens 3A competition tonight against Southeast Polk. At 50-0, the J-Hawks will try to become just the fourth team to finish a season unbeaten and the first since Urbandale did it in 1977. They’re undefeated, but Niemeyer says his team has weaknesses. Niemeyer says a lot of things need to go your way to run the table. Niemeyer says Southeast Polk has an excellent pitcher and run a lot. He says they’ve lost 20 games, but their number one pitcher didn’t pitch all of those games. Niemeyer has been in this spot before. His 1991 Jefferson team entered the tournament with a mark of 55-0 but lost in the quarterfinal round.
