Iowa Congressman Jim Nussle’s just back from a trip to Europe where he met with counterparts in Denmark, Spain and Wales. Nussle says trade and security issues were paramount, but he says the U.S. delegation also thanked the countries’ leaders for being part of the “coalition of the willing” that have backed the U.S. led action in Iraq. Nussle says as far as trade goes, there’s a “double-edged sword” regarding European acceptance of genetically-modified or bio-engineered food and meat. Nussle and the other Americans met with the President of Spain..and Nussle says he knows G-M-O products are safe. But Nussle says most our European allies understand that “bad publicity” from environmentalists is behind the trade barriers that’ve been erected, and he says it’ll be hard to counter the “p-r problem.”
