Governor Tom Vilsack says Iowa could stand to gain from California’s woes. Vilsack says the recall of fellow democratic Governor Gray Davis and the western state’s severe financial problems could make California less attractive to more and more businesses. Vilsack says businesses are looking for a stable tax and regulatory climate, and he says Iowa can offer that kind of stability. Vilsack says “Expansion Management” magazine just rated seven Iowa cities among the top 50 in country for business development, and Des Moines was at the top of the list. Vilsack says the recall of Davis has become a “spectacle” — especially with actor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s entry into the race last week. Vilsack says he’s not sure if “Mr. Schwarzenegger” has any idea how significant and how deep the problems in California are, and Vilsack says can’t blast his opponents away with a good script like he’s done in the movies. Last week, when Vilsack spoke to the School Administrators of Iowa convention, he closed his speech by saying he “wakes up every morning and thanks God he doesn’t live in California.”
