Democratic presidential candidate Joe Lieberman is accusing President Bush of squandering opportunities to make the country safer. Lieberman, a Connecticut Senator who was Al Gore’s runningmate in 2000, says yesterday’s black-outs are a reminder of how vulnerable the U.S. is in the post-September 11th era. Lieberman says the president claims he’s strong on security, but Lieberman quotes former U.S. New Hampshire Republican Senator Warren Rudman, who says America is dangerously unprepared for another 9-11 type attack. Lieberman says he wouldn’t let that happen.Although yesterday’s power outages have not been linked to terrorism, Lieberman says they were an “unsettling experience.” Lieberman says the Bush Administration has “desperately underfunded” Homeland Security. He says that’s a result of a bad plan to give tax cuts to people who don’t need them. Lieberman made his comments during a trip to the Iowa State Fair, right before he ate a fried Twinkie.
