Protestors are picketing outside the school on the Meskwaki settlement, another wrinkle in the saga over control of the tribe’s casino near Tama. The protestors want the school’s leader to step down because Dr. Joel Longie signed a contract with one of the feuding tribal councils. Longie says he had to sign so the school would have money to operate.Longie says he’s not in an elected position, he’s just the school administrator who has the job of providing a quality education to the kids on the settlement. But protesting parents say Longie struck a deal with one of the feuding tribal councils because he knew the other council wanted to fire him. Classes in the Meskwaki settlement school are to start on August 21st. Parents who tried to enter the school yesterday were blocked by Tama County sheriffs deputies. The parents vow to be back today to voice their demands.
