The Iowa Department of Economic Development Board approved a grant for a Des Moines company Thursday, while also delaying a request from a Webster City firm. D-E-D project coordinator Mike Farley says the Trans-Lux Corporation scored a 75-thousand dollar grant to create more jobs at its scoreboard and message board plant. He says the company that’s headquartered in Connecticut is using the grant to move jobs from a plant it closed in Utah. Farley says the plant in Des Moines used to be an independent Iowa company. He says it was the Fairtron Company the Trans-Lux bought in May of 1997. Farley says the total projects is 920-thousand dollars and will bring over two dozen new jobs to Iowa. He says they have 88 existing jobs, and are pledging 25 news jobs over three years. Farley says the new jobs will pay just over 15-dollars-an-hour. Farley says the Webster City request was put on hold for now. He says the request from the City of Webster City on behalf of Electrolux was referred to other programs. He says that means they’ll look at other possible state funding for the program. He says it’s a several million dollar project that involves several hundred jobs. Farley says the Trans-Lux grant won’t have to be repaid if they create the required number of jobs.
