Iowa State coach Dan McCarney will find out quickly how good his freshmen class is. Ten redshirt or true freshman will see action Saturday night when the Cyclones host U-N-I. The list includes quarterback Austin Flynn and tailback Stevie Hicks. McCarney says it’s a combination of excitement, but yet he says they don’t know how the freshmen will react to their first game action. Two years ago the Cyclones beat U-N-I 45-0, but McCarney says the history of this series should prevent the Cyclones from taking the Panthers lightly. He says UNI beat ISU in 1992 and 1994, and he says that serves as a reminder that they can be beat if they’re not ready and not focused. Like all teams, the Cyclones have practiced in the blistering heat but McCarney says there have been no problems. He says they didn’t adjust their plan or change practice times and he credits the trainers for keeping the players on the field.
