A possible tornado hit the southwest Iowa town of Creston last night, leaving a 17-block path of damage. While the National Weather Service hasn’t officially called it a twister, Union County emergency management coordinator Roger Nurnberg says it’s very likely. It had rotational winds. Many people described hearing the freight train sound and many limbs are laying and were broken from what appears to be multidirectional winds. Nurnburg says there are many homes and buildings damaged, the extent of which is still being assessed. He says many large trees were knocked down in the strong winds, knocking out power in the area. There are no reports of injuries. On the plus side, Creston got nearly an inch-and-a-half of rain after a long dry spell.
