A “Center for International Peace and Security Studies” will open next month at the University of Northern Iowa. U-N-I political science professor Phil Mow-Sherry says students and others have expressed interest in probing the causes of terrorist activity. Mow-Sherry says people began to raise questions about the links between the war in Iraq and 9/11. Mow-Sherry says the center will provide academic work for students who may wish to pursue a foreign policy career. Mow-Sherry, who will be the Center’s director, says he’ll try to provide a forum in which students and the people of Iowa can discuss international peace and security issues.Mow-Sherry says the university has experts who cover every region of the world as well as the policymaking process here at home, and he wants to develop speakers’ series and workshops that’ll focus on various issues. In late October, the Center plans to examine the role of Congress in the foreign policy decision-making following 9/11. Mow-Sherry says he’ll pursue private grants to support the center’s work. The Board of Regents this week approved creation of the center.
