Governor Tom Vilsack’s in California for an anti-recall rally supporting California’s Democrat Governor Gray Davis. Vilsack says he’s in Long Beach for the event because he’s the in-coming chair of the Democratic Governors Association. He says he’s concerned about the impact on democracy as they just had an election a few weeks ago that saw Gray Davis reelected. Vilsack says his concern is not limited to Democrats. Vilsack says he also opposes the effort to recall the Republican Governor of Nevada. Vilsack says in that state, you don’t even have to vote someone out of office. Nevada residents just have to collect enough signatures, and their Governor’s gone. Vilsack says the recalls were structured at a time when politicians were dishonest. He says that’s not the situation here. Vilsack says the Governors of California and Nevada are unpopular because they’ve had to make tough choices during a poor economy. Vilsack says challengers who’ve been offering slick slogans as solutions will be in for a big shock if they win next week’s recall election in California.
