The brilliant reds, oranges and yellows of the fall season are part of the allure of this weekend’s Scenic Drive Festival in southeast Iowa’s Van Buren County. Several small communities are holding events today and tomorrow designed to lure in leaf-watchers and other passers-by. Judy Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Villages of Van Buren, suggests starting in Keosauqua. There are thousands of crafts and flea market items, Bentonsport is having a juried art show and an antique show, and Bonaparte is having a craft show and flea market. Johnson says Lacey-Keosauqua State Park is hosting a lumberjack show featuring reenactments of a nostalgic logging competition from the early 1900s.Johnson says the town of Bentonsport is zeroing in on showcasing the time period between the late 1830s and the mid 1840s.
