Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean says he’s the only candidate in the race who has taken steps to help reduce prescription drug costs for seniors. Dean, a doctor who was Vermont’s Governor for the past 12 years, says one-third of all seniors in his state now get government-subsidized prescription drug benefits. Dean says his opponents who’ve been part of Congress have failed to deliver. Dean says residents in Vermont save tons of money because he passed a law that lets them buy prescription drugs in Canada — at dramatically lower prices.Dean says the state of Vermont actively recruited seniors and doctors to sign up to obtain prescription drugs from a pharmacy in Canada. Dean says, however, the Bush Administration has started a crackdown on U.S. residents who buy their prescriptions from Canada rather than cracking down on pharmaceutical companies that find ways to bilk American consumers by, for instance, keeping cheaper generic drugs off the market here. Dean arrived in Council Bluffs last night, and he’s campaigning in the state today, talking about senior issues in advance of Wednesday’s A-A-R-P forum in Des Moines.
