Pheasant-hunting season opened in Iowa over the weekend. No hunters were reported killed in accidents but at least one hunter was hurt by “friendly fire.” A hunter from Newton was shot and hurt Saturday morning while hunting with a group of seven other hunters in Poweshiek County. 27-year-old Scott Grandstaff was struck by six pellets fired by another hunter in his group who was firing at a pheasant in front of them. Grandstaff was hit in the forehead, chest, finger and throat. He was taken to a hospital in Grinnell, then transferred to a hospital in Des Moines, where he was treated and released.
