Governor Tom Vilsack is in St. Louis for a meeting of Midwestern governors and their staffs, and he’s touting their efforts on energy. Vilsack says Midwestern governors are working together to ensure there are adequate transmission lines so as states like Iowa erect wind turbines and generate power, the electricity can be easily transmitted within the region. Vilsack says Midwestern Governors have united on other energy issues, such as the promotion of corn-based ethanol fuel. The energy bill in Congress includes pro-ethanol provisions that Vilsack says are there in part because Midwestern governors in a bipartisan way suggested it’s something important to the heartland. Vilsack says the conference today in St. Louis is building on those successes. It’s the 34th annual Midwestern Governors’ Conference, and Vilsack is one of four governors who are taking part. Aides to governors from 7 other states are there, too.
