A benefit breakfast is planned this weekend to help rebuild a western Iowa nature center that was heavily damaged by vandals last month. Crawford County Conservation naturalist Kelley Sonnichsen says criminals tore through the entire facility like a tornado. Sonnichsen says computers and printers were damaged as was the copy machine. Many of the animal cages were broken open and the animals were running loose in the nature center. Oil was dumped in some of the fish aquariums. It took two and and a half days to clean up the mess. Sonnichsen says the Denison community is going the extra mile to repair the damage.Tomorrow (Sunday) morning, a pancake breakfast will be held at Yellow Smoke Park near Denison, one of several fundraisers for the nature center. Sonnichsen says it’s a reassuring gesture that so many of the area’s residents are pitching in to rebuild. The fundraiser/breakfast is scheduled for 8 AM – 12:30 P.M. Sunday at the park’s lookout shelter.
