Governments in northwest Iowa’s Plymouth County are backing an incentive plan to encourage Wells Dairy, the maker of Blue Bunny ice cream, to build its new corporate campus in the LeMars area. The LeMars City Council and the Plymouth County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday passed motions in support of a financing package for the family-owned dairy. A presentation will be made to Wells in about two weeks. LeMars city councilman Rex Knapp says the city must do whatever it can to keep Wells from moving to South Dakota, or elsewhere.Knapp says property taxes will -not- be effected by the incentive package. He says if Wells leaves town though, he believes they’ll have to raise taxes to make up the difference. Knapp says they have to use state, local and county resources to do whatever they can to keep the dairy in town. Due to the competitive nature of the proposals, neither city or county officials are saying what’s in the package. A state incentive package may be presented to the 90-year-old business next week — on December 11th.
