Governor Tom Vilsack says the state has offered the Wells Dairy a “very aggressive” package to try to keep the firm’s headquarters in Iowa. Vilsack met privately with the company’s executives yesterday in LeMars. Vilsack told reporters afterwards that officials from the company “recognized” the offer is “significant” However, neither Vilsack nor the company’s executives will reveal the details of the state’s incentive package. Vilsack did say the package is not tied to a specific city, like LeMars or Sioux City — two Iowa towns vying to be the company’s home. Vilsack says the state offer can be, and probably will be, supplemented by other communities making offers to Wells’. Vilsack suggests there is the possibility the Wells Dairy will choose to place facilities in more than one city. A group from the LeMars area will meet with managers of the dairy next week to try to keep the 90-year-old company in their town.
