Search underway for Swan shooter

State wildlife officials are asking for the public’s help in finding whoever is responsible for shooting and injuring a trumpeter swan in northern Iowa near Mason City over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Cerro Gordo County Conservation Director Fred Heinz says all swans are protected from hunting in the state of Iowa. They received a call about an injured swan, which had been shot in the wing. Heinz says anyone with information about the incident should contact the poachers tip line.The Iowa Turn In Poachers (TIP) line is 1-800-532-2020 and all calls are anonymous. Heinz says the bird will live, but its injuries are severe. The wing had to be amputated and the bird will never fly again. Heinz says the bird may not be able to reproduce either because the wings are used for balance during the mating process. The incident took place over the Thanksgiving weekend near Mallard Marsh in northwest Cerro Gordo County.
