The capture of Saddam Hussein has shifted the focus of the democrats vying to challenge President Bush in 2004. Retired General Wesley Clark, former Vermont Governor Howard Dean and North Carolina Senator John Edwards critiqued Bush’s foreign policy in speeches yesterday. Edwards delivered his speech in Des Moines and afterwards he sidestepped the question of how Saddam’s capture would alter the presidential race. Edwards says Saddam’s capture creates the real potential for a more secure environment in Iraq, and he says if the Bush Administration “internationalizes” the war effort, it will be a bigger success than it has been. Edwards, however, concedes democrats may focus more on the economy than on Iraq.Edwards says if Iraq becomes more stable, then democrats will likely “focus on what’s happening here” in this country. Massachusetts Senator John Kerry has rearranged his schedule so he can deliver his own critique on Tuesday here in Iowa at Drake University.
