Iowa tackle Robert Gallery picked up his Outland Trophy during a ceremony last night in Omaha. Gallery began his college career as a tight end but now is considered one of the top picks in the NFL draft. He says it’s a great honor to be among those who have won the award, and phenomenal way for Iowa to end the year and for him to end his carreer.
Iowa returns to Big Ten against Northwestern
After opening Big Ten play with a win over Purdue the Iowa Hawkeyes return to action at home against Northwestern. Coach Steve Alford has been pleased with the play of his team on defense but the Hawks face a different test against a Wildcat team that tries to utilize mistakes to get layups. He says they really have to be patient defensively, because if you gamble, they’re going to hurt you.Alford says the improvement on defense began with the return of Pierre Pierce. He says Pierce is the staple of the defense and something they didn’t have last year.Iowa is 8-3.
Boy’s basketball features top matchup
High school boys’ basketball action tonight features a top five matchup in class 2A as second-ranked Tipton visits number three Mid-Prairie. Tipton returned from the holiday break with a nine point win over Mount Vernon Tuesday night. This will be Mid-Prairie’s first game since December 20th.Mid-Prairie coach Don Showalter’s team is 7-0 despite a lack of heighth. The heighth disadvantage will be extreme against Tipton, as their shortest player is as tall as his tallest player. Showalter says they try to take size out of the equation by pushing the tempo and making it a full court game.
Morningside faces top-ranked team
One versus two matchups are rare but that will be the case this weekend as the Morningside women, second rated in NAIA, visits number one Dakota Wesleyan. At 17-0 Morningside has already equaled last year’s win total. Morningside’s press has led to a turnover ratio of plus-19 but coach Jamie Sale says the halfcourt defense is vastly improved. He says they gave up a lot of layups last year and that hurt them.
UNI women trying to overcome slow MVC start
The UNI women started quickly against Southwest Missouri State by building a 20 to 11 first half lead. Buyt the Panthers were then outscored 22-0 and S-M-S cruised to an 80-65 win. UNI drops to 0-3 in the Valley. UNI coach Tony Dicecco who says Southwest Missouri had too many weapons on offense, and he says they can’t keep giving up 80 points a game.Sophomore Kim Hansen led UNI with 21 points, she says it was one of her better offensive games, but defensively, she doesn’t think it was. Iowa women fall to Penn State
The eighth-ranked Penn State women used a late run in the opening half to take command enroute to a 92-64 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes in Big Ten action.Iowa coach Lisa Bluder says they gave up too many offensive rebounds and had too many turnover. She says the Penn State guards controlled the game and did a good job defensively.Iowa falls to 1-1 in the Big Ten and 7-6 overall.
Drake blasts Bradley for second MVC win
Drake coach Tom Davis was hoping the Bulldogs would carry over the momentum gained in a win at Wichita State into Thursday night’s game against Bradley and that’s exactly what happened. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead and cruised to a 90-67 win over the Braves in the Knapp Center. Davis was pleased with the performance despite a couple of bad practices early in the week. He said they had a little talk and he says they got it together and played pretty tough.Drake shot 61 percent for the game and had 23 assists in the game. He says they’ve been taking pretty good care of the ball and passing it well. David Bancroft had 13 points for Drake while making all six of his shots. He says it was a big win for the Bulldogs, and says it shows the win against Wichita State wasn’t a fluke. Drake is now 6-5 on the season.
