Canines from across the country are competing for the title “Best in Show” in Des Moines this weekend at the annual dog show, sponsored by the Central Iowa Kennel Club. The club’s Paula Midgorden says it’ll be a full house. She expects a capacity crowd of 1200 dogs representing up to 125 breeds. Midgorden says the dogs will be coming from as far away as California and Maine — as well as many dogs from Iowa. She explains how the competition works. They go through classes by age and are broken down by color and by size in the various breeds, competing against the standard for what the breeds are supposed to be. Midgorden says people who attend the show will see plenty of dogs they likely won’t be able to identify. The show opens at 8:30 A-M both today and tomorrow at the 4-H Building of the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
