Iowa guard Jeff Horner has been named the Big Ten Conference player of the week. The sophomore from Mason City had 21 points and six rebounds in a loss at Michigan State and followed that up by posting 17-points, ten rebounds, six assists and hitting the game winning basket at the end of double overtime in an 84-82 win at Indiana. Iowa coach Steve Alford says Horner’s best asset is his work ethic. Alford says Horner will stay after practice if he doesn’t get enough work.Alford says Horner’s value goes well beyond his scoring. He says it’ll be tough for Horner to sustain the 95-percent level at the free-throw line and 60-percent from the three-point line. Alford says no one has ever had those numbers, and he tells Horner that it’s a hard pace to continue at, and he shouldn’t get frustrated if he has an off night. Alford says Horner has made strides but so have the other players like Glen Worley, Brody Boyd and Greg Brunner. Iowa returns to action Wednesday night at home against Wisconsin.
