A judge has tossed out the Iowa law which bars convicted sex offenders from living within two-thousand feet of a school or day care. The Iowa Civil Liberties Union argued the law was so restrictive, some sex offenders couldn’t find a place to live in some smaller Iowa communities. Senator Jerry Behn, a republican from Boone, pushed for the “safe zone” around schools and day care centers and hopes to find some way to come up with a new “safe zone” that would pass a judge’s review. Behn says the two-thousand feet distance was the farthest in the country, but other states have similar restrictions on the book. Behn says he doesn’t want a debate over where convicted sexual predators may live to turn the convicts into “victims.” Behn says they committed a crime, and lawmakers are trying to keep sexual perverts away from kids, if possible. Behn says it’s “still an important cause” and he’d like to have some state restriction on sex offender living quarters.
