A poll showing Iowan’s support changes in the sales and cigarette taxes may lead to a change in the legislature. The poll found a majority of Iowans support expanding the state sales tax to more services — like accounting — and an even greater number favor hiking the tax on cigarettes by 60 cents. Those proposals were advanced in January by democrat Governor Tom Vilsack, but rejected by the republican legislature that controls the debate agenda. Now republicans says they may bring the measures forward for a vote to see if they would pass to draw democrats in the legislature to vote for the tax increases. The republicans say they’ve yet to see either proposal in bill form from the governor and are waiting to see the bills before scheduling any debate.
