Officials with a central Iowa symphony hope to cash in with one of this week’s Academy Award winners, but they’ll have to be patient. On Sunday night, Howard Shore won the Oscar for “Best Musical Score” for composing the soundtrack to “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” the third movie in the trilogy that’s earned two-point-eight billion dollars from ticket sales worldwide. Shore created the haunting ballads, the powerful heroes’ themes and the fast-shifting music behind the battle scenes. Shore is bringing his talents to Iowa’s capitol city — and will conduct the Des Moines Symphony for what’s being called “The Lord of the Rings Symphony” with a collection of songs from all three films. The six-movement symphony will be performed 14 months from now, the nights of May 14th and 15th of 2005. Tickets go on sale in August.
