Northern Iowans are learning about one of the most famous bank robbers of the 1930’s. Mason City business leaders are sponsoring “Dillinger Days” to mark the 70th anniversary of the robbery of the First National Bank by John Dillinger and his gang. Chamber of Commerce executive director Robin Anderson highlights the events underway.A historical exhibit of the robbery is on display in the lobby of Wells Fargo bank in downtown Mason City. Anderson says Saturday night will be the festival’s main event. They’ll show a documentary about the robbery for the first time Saturday night during a celebration at Southbridge Mall. Anderson says there will be plenty of other activities going on Saturday night, and if you can’t get down to see the exhibit, you can see it Saturday as well.The historical display is being moved to the mall Saturday so that those in attendance can see it there. Dillinger and his group of bandits robbed the First National Bank in Mason City on March 13th, 1934. Dillinger was gunned down later that summer by federal officers outside of a movie theater in Chicago.
