A Scottish rock band playing music that’s an unusual blend of bagpipes and electric guitars is headed for its first-ever shows in Iowa this weekend. The five-member Wolfstone is in its 14th year playing what’s called Celtic (KEL-tik) rock. Duncan Chisholm plays the fiddle, part of what gives the music its unique sound of the Scottish Highlands. The other members of Wolfstone play the bagpipes, electric guitar, drums and bass. The 35-year-old Chisholm says their hybrid style of music has grown in popularity on both continents, a combination of AC-DC metal and the Irish Rovers. Chisholm says “It’s got the spirit of Highland music but it’s got the strength of a rock-n-roll band as well.” He says “You can get Celtic rock bands from California or you can get them from Spain or wherever. It’s quite a broad way of looking at it. We’re very proudly Highland Scots and…represent the area that we’re from and the music that we play is very much our own.” Saturday’s 8 P.M. show is at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines. Sunday’s show in Cedar Rapids is at C-S-P-S. For more information, surf to “www.wolfstone.co.uk”.
