The “dating doctor” is making a house call in Cedar Falls tonight. David Coleman is speaking at the University of Northern Iowa on a variety of topics, including relationships, team building and values. Coleman, who’s written three books on dating, says he works to get his audiences to strive to make their relationships with everyone in their lives count.Coleman says he tries to get people to look at every single day of their lives, make every day matter, clean the slate every day and don’t carry over ill feelings, adding, “You never get a wasted day back so don’t waste today.” He says Internet dating services can help people find a date, but perhaps not a lifemate. Coleman says be aware of certain on-line truths. What someone is and who they show you they are over the Internet are two different things. They won’t look exactly as they do in the pictures either. Coleman says “Sometimes people can be excellent communicators over keyboard to keyboard but when they get together, they have a bit more trouble.” As for the awkward first date, Coleman says to go on a date that takes the focus off of your having to entertain each other or forcing the conversation.Make the first date something like the circus or even a pro wrestling match, or just a meal at a mall followed by window-shopping, anything to break the ice. Also, that first date should last no longer than two-to-three hours and be in a public place. The 7 P.M. lecture at U-N-I’s Lang Hall Auditorium is free and open to anyone.
