Early Vieshea riot estimate at 40 to 50 thousand dollars

Ames police have released some preliminary figures on the cost of the Vieshea rioting early Sunday morning. The initial police estimate puts the damage at 40 to 50-thousand dollars. That includes damage to police vehicles and equipment, a fire truck, light poles, parking meters, signs, sign posts and barricades. Police say that does not include any of the overtime expense for officers, or the cost of the pepper spray and tear gas used to quell the riot. That estimate also does not include damage to businesses in the Campustown area, and the I-S-U campus. Police also released figures showing that 132 people were arrested and 219 were issued citations. Police say 260 of the people ticketed or arrested were non-residents, while 83 had Ames addresses.
