President Bush visited Iowa last week, now Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry will return to Iowa this weekend for a public rally in Des Moines. It marks Kerry’s first trip to Iowa since he won the January 19th Iowa Caucuses. First Lady Christie Vilsack will serve as emcee for Sunday’s rally. Mrs. Vilsack says she’s excited about bringing together democrats to show the party’s excited about winning back the White House and turning around the economy. Mrs. Vilsack expects Kerry to talk about what he learned on the Iowa campaign trail. Mrs. Vilsack says most of the issues Kerry’s talking about now were “tried out” on the Iowa campaign trail. She says Iowans will find it interesting to discover who they influenced the campaign conversation they hear on the radio, see on the television and read in the newspaper every day. Sunday’s rally is scheduled to begin at two o’clock in Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium. Governor Tom Vilsack’s included in lists of potential running mates for Kerry. Mrs. Vilsack endorsed Kerry right before the Iowa Caucuses and talked with reporters this afternoon in a phone call arranged by the Kerry campaign. Mrs. Vilsack says she and her husband are “glad” to help Kerry campaign, whenever possible. Mrs. Vilsack says she and her husband are most concerned about doing their jobs in Iowa, but in the course of their duties, Mrs. Vilsack says she and her husband will be advancing ideas on job creation, health care reform and education that Kerry’s talking about on nationwide. Tickets are required for Sunday’s rally, but the tickets are free and can be obtained on-line at www.iowademocrats.org or by calling Iowa Democratic Party headquarters at 515-242-7292. Iowa is considered a toss-up state for this fall’s election and, in addition to personal appearances this month, both Kerry and Bush are focusing advertising resources here to sway votes. Bush lost Iowa in 2000 by about four-thousand votes.
