A group that works to promote mutual respect and understanding between Iowans and people from all cultures and countries is looking for nominees of immigrants or refugees for its “Passport to Prosperity” awards. Michelle Soria, executive director of the Iowa Council for International Understanding, explains what type of person they’re seeking. They’re looking for immigrants and refugees who’ve made significant contributions to their communities, people who’ve achieved and made a difference. Soria says she hopes people in every one of Iowa’s 99 counties nominate someone for the award — and five Iowa winners will be chosen for the awards to be given out this fall. This is the third year for the program. Nominees need to live in Iowa now and need to have lived here at least five years. The awards event is planned for September 11 with an elegant international buffet style dinner and entertainment. The nomination form and materials must be received by July 11. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Iowa Council for International Understanding website “www.iciu.org” or by calling (515) 282-8269.
