Iowa’s Attorney General is warning older Iowans to be wary of a new con that targets them. Attorney General Tom Miller says con artists are starting to ask seniors for their bank account numbers and other personal information, with the promise of lining up new prescription drug discounts through Medicare. Miller says “identity thieves” have struck in at least 15 states. Miller says some even posed as Medicare officials. Miller says the federal Medicare program will only extend prescription drug benefits through the mail, not over the phone or door-to-door. According to Miller, Iowans should double check any Medicare mailing to make sure it’s from the federal government because some fakes look awfully official.
