A hotel being built in western Iowa’s Pottawattamie County likely won’t be ready for guests on schedule — after it caught fire. The fire happened at the Motel Six that’s under construction on Highway 59 just north of Avoca. Construction workers reported the fire at about 2:30 yesterday afternoon. The fire was contained to a second-floor room and hallway. Avoca Fire Chief Scott Piggsley says the second floor suffered heat and smoke damage, while parts of the first floor suffered water damage. Damage is estimated at 30-thousand dollars. The building was nearing completion, but according to Piggsley, the damage should NOT be severe enough to prevent the hotel from opening. Fire departments from Avoca, Hancock, Harlan, Shelby and Walnut helped fight the fire. A cause has not yet been determined.
