Imagine a tennis ball, but instead of it being fuzzy and yellow, picture it as a solid rock of ice. That’s what fell on parts of eastern Iowa this morning. Huge hailstones accompanied a severe thunderstorm that rolled across Johnson and Cedar counties about 7 A.M. Stephanie Kolbus is a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Davenport. One weather service spotter reports two-and-a-half inch diameter hail south of Iowa City about a mile. Other reports range from three-quarter inch hail to an inch-and-a-half diameter. Kolbus says she hasn’t heard about hail this big in Iowa in a long time.Kolbus says there are reports of damage to vehicles in and around Iowa City but so far, no reports of any injuries.
